It’s this year’s must-have pre-holiday gift for kids, and it all started with an entrepreneurial mom who wanted to create something unique for her children — something interactive to accentuate the sense of adventure during that special time of year.

Lisa Huckemeyer drew on her own sense of creativity, and Elfing Around was born.

“We were looking for something special and memorable for our kids during the busy Christmas season — a new, kid-friendly family tradition,” said Huckemeyer, mother of two boys.

The elves are the stars of the new, California-based business. The elves become special “friends” for children during the 12 days leading up to Christmas Day. Parents get into the act, too, creating a series of adventure and playtime scenarios for the elves while the child is asleep. The elves are geared toward children ages 3 to 9.

The elves are available in boy and girl models — and you can choose your elves’ names. Each 12-inch, pose-able plush elf comes with an Adventure Guide Book for parents, to help stir the creative juices of Mom and Dad. “The Adventure Guide gives parents ideas regarding what to do with the elf each night,” Huckemeyer said.

For example, the kids might awake one morning and find the elves parked in front of their favorite movie, munching on popcorn. Or, perhaps, the elves may be playing hide and seek and are waiting for their newest best friend (your child) to awake and find them. “They’re always playful and they are never harmful,” Huckemeyer said, adding the guidebook includes postcards with messages that can be left for the children after each nightly adventure.

Each elf arrives with a personalized letter from Santa, announcing the arrival of the child’s very own elf friend. The package is available for $29.99 at www.elfingaround.com.

Huckemeyer said her new business has piqued her own sense of anticipation and excitement for the holidays.

“I love being a mom, but there’s more to being a mom than just making cookies and carpool,” said Huckemeyer, who graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with bachelor’s degrees in business and child/family studies. She and her husband, Dan, an insurance executive, have lived in Southern California for the past 20 years.

Having worked for a major retailer as an internal auditor, Huckemeyer has drawn on her business experience both for parenting and for Elfing Around. She believes the charming elves will help parents and children alike create some of the most memorable holidays.

Huckemeyer adds, “Not only is it proven that sparking creativity and imagination in early years teaches children to think outside the box later on in life, but also the elves make your kids wake up happy and excited during the 12 busiest days of the year. What more could a mom ask for?
